The IBC tote glossary.
An IBC tote is a reusable 275- or 330-gallon caged HDPE container for bulk liquids, with a top fill cap and a bottom discharge valve. This A–Z glossary defines 63+ related terms — grades (food-grade to rebottled), fittings (camlock, S60x6, EPDM), ratings (UN/DOT, packing group), and the reuse vocabulary of the circular economy.

How the grades relate: a tote's grade comes from its prior contents and reconditioning history — food-grade and rebottled for consumables, industrial-grade for non-consumable duties, and reconditioned describing the wash-and-retest process any grade can go through. - IBC (Intermediate Bulk Container)
- A reusable industrial container built to store and transport bulk liquids and free-flowing solids in volumes between a drum and a full storage tank — typically 275 or 330 US gallons. The mainstream design is a caged HDPE bottle on a pallet with a top fill cap and a bottom discharge valve. “IBC” and “tote” are used interchangeably across North American industry.
- Tote
- The common North American shorthand for a caged IBC. When someone says “a 275 tote” they mean a 275-gallon intermediate bulk container. The word carries no separate technical meaning from IBC.
- HDPE (High-Density Polyethylene)
- The plastic the inner bottle is molded from. HDPE is chemically resistant, tough, food-safe in virgin form, and fully recyclable, which is why it dominates IBC construction. Virgin HDPE is required for new food-grade and rebottled units; reclaimed HDPE can be granulated into regrind for a next life.
- Cage
- The welded metal exoskeleton — almost always galvanized steel — that surrounds and protects the HDPE bottle, carries the stacking load, and gives forklifts something rigid to move. The cage recycles endlessly and can be re-caged onto a fresh bottle during rebottling.
- Caged IBC
- An IBC whose bottle sits inside a steel cage, as opposed to a rigid all-plastic or composite design. The caged style is the industry default because the cage protects the bottle, bears the stack, and is trivially recyclable.
- Composite IBC
- The formal term for the caged design: a composite of an HDPE inner bottle and a steel outer cage on a pallet. “Composite IBC” is the phrasing you’ll see in UN/DOT packaging codes such as 31HA1.
- GMA pallet
- The 40 x 48 inch pallet standard set by the Grocery Manufacturers Association and the footprint every mainstream IBC is built to. Sharing this footprint is why totes palletize two-abreast in a 53’ trailer and drop into standard warehouse racking.
- Bung
- A threaded plug or opening on a container. On IBCs the term is borrowed from drum language and usually refers to the top fill opening or an auxiliary port; the primary top opening is more precisely called the fill cap.
- Buttress thread
- The coarse, asymmetric thread profile used on the 6-inch top fill opening of most IBC totes. Its sawtooth shape resists the axial load of a tight seal and is what a replacement lid must match to seat properly.
- Ball valve
- A quarter-turn discharge valve using a bored ball to open and close flow. Ball valves seal tightly and suit clean liquids, but the bore can trap or clog on thick or solid-laden product where a butterfly valve clears better.
- Butterfly valve
- A quarter-turn discharge valve using a rotating disc across the flow path. Butterfly valves are the IBC default because they’re compact, cheap to replace, and pass viscous or slightly solid-laden liquids like slurry more freely than a ball valve.
- Camlock
- A cam-and-groove quick-connect coupling that locks a hose to the tote outlet with two levers — no threading required. A 2-inch camlock is the most common IBC outlet adapter and mates instantly with a matching hose end.
- Closed-loop
- A material system in which a product is recovered and reused instead of discarded — the core of the IBC reuse model. We sell a tote, buy it back at end of service, recondition or granulate it, and put the material back into circulation.
- Circular economy
- An economic model that designs out waste by keeping materials in use through reuse, reconditioning, and recycling. Reusable IBCs are a textbook example: one tote can serve many lives before its HDPE is finally granulated and its steel cage recycled.
- Cross-contamination
- The unwanted transfer of a prior product, residue, or microbe into a new fill. It’s the central risk in tote reuse and is defeated by triple-rinsing, hot-washing, dedicating one tote per product, and tracking prior contents on the data plate.

- Data plate
- The stamped or affixed plate on a reconditioned tote documenting its identity — UN/DOT marking, prior contents, manufacture and retest dates, and reconditioner. It’s the traceability record an auditor or regulator will ask to see.
- Discharge valve
- The bottom outlet valve through which the tote empties, usually 2 inches nominal and either butterfly or ball style. It threads or clamps to an outlet adapter (camlock, S60x6, NPT, or garden hose) for connecting a hose or pump.
- DN50
- A metric nominal-diameter designation (Diameter Nominal 50 mm) roughly equal to a 2-inch outlet — the common IBC discharge size. You’ll see DN50 paired with the S60x6 coupling spec on European-origin totes.
- Dust cap
- A protective cap that covers the discharge outlet during transport and storage to keep grit and debris out of the valve and threads. It is a shipping cover, not a pressure seal — the valve itself holds back the liquid.
- Dust cap vs. cap seal
- The dust cap keeps the outlet clean; a foil gasket or cap seal under it provides the actual leak-tight barrier for shipping. Both should be present and intact on a properly closed tote before it moves.
- EPDM gasket
- The standard rubber sealing gasket at the valve and cap, made from EPDM (ethylene propylene diene monomer). EPDM handles water, many acids and bases, and general chemicals well but is not suited to hydrocarbons — use Viton there.
- Fill cap
- The screw-on lid that closes the top fill opening, typically 6 inches on a buttress thread. Fill caps come vented or non-vented; a vented lid relieves pressure or vacuum as liquid moves in and out.
- First-flush diverter
- A rainwater-harvesting device that diverts the dirty first surge of runoff away from the tote before clean water is collected. Common when IBCs are repurposed as rain barrels or irrigation reservoirs to keep debris out of the stored water.
- Foil gasket
- An induction-sealed foil membrane placed under the fill cap to provide a tamper-evident, leak-tight barrier for shipping and to protect contents from air. It’s pierced or removed at first use.
- Food-grade
- A tote certified fit for consumable, potable, or animal-feed contact — meaning it was molded from FDA-compliant virgin HDPE and only ever held FDA-approved food-safe contents, with a documented history to prove it. Anything on a consumable pathway should use food-grade or rebottled units. See the food-grade guide.
- Forklift pockets
- The openings in the pallet base that a forklift’s tines enter to lift the tote. Standard IBC pallets offer four-way entry, letting a driver approach from any side — a key reason totes move so efficiently.
- Gasket
- Any compressible seal that prevents leaks at a joint — most importantly at the discharge valve and the fill cap. Material choice (EPDM standard, Viton for solvents, food-grade for consumables) must match the product being stored.
- Granulation
- The size-reduction step in recycling where a retired HDPE bottle is shredded into small, uniform flakes or granules. The output — regrind — feeds back into new plastic products, closing the loop when a tote can no longer be reused.
- Gross weight
- The total weight of the tote plus its contents. A 275-gallon tote filled with water runs about 2,400 lbs and a 330 about 2,900 lbs; freight is priced on gross, not gallons, so plan racking, floors, and truckloads around it.
- GMA-compatible
- Describes equipment or racking built around the 40 x 48 inch GMA pallet footprint — which every mainstream IBC matches. GMA compatibility is what lets totes flow through standard automated warehouse systems.
- Hot-wash
- A reconditioning step using heated water and detergent (and sometimes caustic) to strip residues a cold rinse can’t remove. Hot-washing follows triple-rinsing and is essential before a tote can be re-certified for food or clean-fill service.
- HDPE regrind
- Recycled HDPE reduced to granules through granulation and reprocessed into new products. Using regrind displaces virgin resin and is the recycling endpoint for a bottle that has finished its reuse life.

- Industrial-grade
- A tote whose prior contents were non-hazardous industrial liquids — soaps, surfactants, treatment chemicals, non-consumable additives. Fully serviceable for manufacturing, cleaning, and non-potable water, but not for food or consumable contact.
- Insulated jacket
- A removable thermal cover wrapped around a tote to slow heat loss or gain, protecting temperature-sensitive product and often paired with a tote heater. Useful for keeping viscous liquids pumpable in cold environments.
- LTL (Less-Than-Truckload)
- A freight mode where your totes share a trailer with other shippers’ goods, priced by weight, class, and distance. LTL suits small quantities — a few totes — but costs more per unit than a full load and handles the freight more.
- FTL (Full-Truckload)
- A freight mode where your shipment fills a dedicated trailer, priced per lane rather than per pallet. About 40 full totes fill a 53’ dry van; FTL is the economical choice for buying or selling totes by the truckload.
- Off-gassing
- The release of vapor from residual product or degrading material inside a tote. It matters for safety (flammable or toxic vapors), for headspace pressure, and as a reason to keep slurry and reactive contents in short-hold transfer rather than long storage.
N – R

- NPT (National Pipe Thread)
- A tapered American pipe-thread standard used on some IBC outlet adapters and fittings. An NPT outlet lets you thread standard plumbing hardware directly to the tote; confirm thread type before buying adapters.
- Non-potable
- Water or duty not intended for human or animal consumption — facility washdown, reclaimed gray water, closed-loop capture. Non-potable service can run on clean industrial-grade totes rather than food-grade.
- Packing group
- A UN/DOT hazard tier — I (high danger), II (medium), or III (low) — assigned to a dangerous good and encoded in a tote’s UN rating. The packing group a tote is tested to must equal or exceed the hazard of what you put in it.
- Palletizing
- Arranging and securing totes on their pallets for storage and transport. Because every IBC shares the GMA footprint, they palletize predictably two-abreast in a trailer and stack within cage limits.
- Potable
- Safe for human consumption. Potable-water and consumable duties require food-grade or rebottled totes with a clean, documented history — never a generic industrial unit.
- Prior contents
- What a used tote last held. Prior contents drive its grade, its cleaning requirements, and its suitability for a new fill; a reputable reconditioner records them on the data plate so you can assess cross-contamination risk.
- Reconditioned
- A used tote that has been emptied, triple-rinsed, hot-washed, pressure- and leak-tested, and had its valve, cap, and gaskets replaced or re-certified as needed. The result performs like new at a fraction of the environmental footprint. Compare grades in the grades guide.
- Rebottled
- A tote fitted with a brand-new HDPE bottle inside a reclaimed steel cage on a serviceable pallet. You get a factory-fresh interior — ideal for food-grade or sensitive product — while reusing the cage and pallet to cut impact.
- Retested tote
- A tote that has passed the periodic UN/DOT retesting (leakproofness and, where applicable, hydraulic/stacking checks) required to keep carrying regulated goods. The retest date is stamped on the data plate and has an expiry.
- Reverse logistics
- The return leg of the supply chain — collecting empty or retired totes from customers and routing them to reconditioning, rebottling, or recycling. Efficient reverse logistics is what makes closed-loop tote reuse economically viable nationwide.
S – Z

- S60x6 coupling
- A common metric IBC outlet thread — a 60 mm buttress-style coarse thread — that many adapters (to camlock, NPT, or garden hose) screw onto. Often paired with the DN50 discharge size on European-pattern totes.
- Secondary containment
- A barrier — usually a spill pallet or bund — that catches leaks or spills so they can’t reach the ground or a drain. EPA and fire codes require secondary containment for many stored liquids; it’s standard practice for chemical and solvent totes.
- Spill pallet
- A dedicated containment pallet with a sump beneath the deck sized to hold the volume of a leaking tote (often 110% of one container). Placing a tote on a spill pallet is the simplest way to meet secondary-containment rules.
- Specific gravity
- The density of a liquid relative to water. It sets a full tote’s gross weight: a product with a specific gravity of 1.3 makes a 275-gallon tote about 30% heavier than water would, which can weight-out a trailer before it cubes out.
- Stacking load
- The maximum weight a filled tote’s cage and bottle can safely bear from totes stacked on top. It caps how high you stack — typically two-high for full totes — and is a rated figure you must not exceed in storage or transit.
- Tare weight
- The empty weight of the tote itself — bottle, cage, and pallet — before any product. It runs about 120–160 lbs depending on cage and pallet type, and you subtract it from gross to find net product weight.
- Tote heater
- An electric wrap, band, or blanket that warms a tote to keep viscous or freeze-sensitive product flowable. Often used with an insulated jacket in cold storage or outdoor settings to maintain pumpable temperature.
- Triple-rinse
- The reconditioning practice of rinsing a tote three times, draining fully between rinses, to dilute and remove residual prior contents. It’s the first line of defense against cross-contamination and precedes hot-washing.
- UN/DOT rating
- The certification marking that authorizes a tote to transport regulated dangerous goods, showing the design type, materials, packing group, and test date. Only a rated, in-date tote may legally ship hazardous liquids by road.
- UN31HA1
- A specific UN packaging code for a composite IBC: 31 = composite IBC for liquids, HA = HDPE bottle with a steel cage, 1 = intended for liquids. Seeing UN31HA1 on the data plate tells you the tote is design-approved for rated liquid service.
- UV degradation
- The gradual weakening and discoloration of HDPE from prolonged sunlight exposure, which can make an outdoor bottle brittle over years. Store totes shaded or indoors, and inspect long-outdoor units for chalking or cracking before reuse.
- Valve outlet
- The threaded or clamped connection point at the discharge valve where an adapter or hose attaches. Its size and thread (2-inch camlock, S60x6, NPT, or garden hose) determine which adapters and pumps you’ll need.
- Viton
- A fluoroelastomer gasket material chosen when EPDM won’t do — chiefly for hydrocarbons, fuels, and aggressive solvents. Viton seals resist chemical attack that would swell or degrade a standard EPDM gasket.
- 275 gallon
- The most common IBC size: roughly 40 x 48 x 46 inches (~1,040 L), about 2,400 lbs full of water. Its lower height and lighter gross make it the go-to where clearance or floor loading is tight.
- 330 gallon
- The taller standard IBC: same 40 x 48 inch footprint but ~53 inches high (~1,250 L), about 2,900 lbs full of water. It buys 20% more capacity per pallet position — the choice for dense freight lanes.
- Secondary discharge (dust cap seal)
- The layered closure at the outlet — valve, then a foil or gasket seal, then the dust cap — that together make a tote leak-tight and clean for shipment. All three should be checked before a tote leaves the yard.
