Cannabis and hemp facilities run on liquids: feed water, pH and nutrient stock, enzyme and beneficial-microbe brews, wash and rinse water, and — on the processing side — extraction solvents and biomass slurry. Drums are too small for a fertigation room and open tanks invite contamination. A 275 or 330 gallon IBC tote is the right unit of measure: it palletizes, pumps out through a 2" valve, seals under a 6" buttress cap, and carries a data plate that documents exactly what has been inside.
That traceability is the difference. In an industry where a state inspector can ask for a paper trail on your inputs, a tote whose prior contents and reconditioning history are on record is an asset, not a liability. Irrigation, fertigation & nutrient dosing.
Fertigation delivers nutrients through the irrigation line, so the tote that feeds your injector is effectively part of the plant's diet. Keep that water potable when the crop is a consumable, and treat every stock tank as a single-purpose vessel. A dedicated 275-gallon reconditioned tote per formula — base A, base B, cal-mag, pH stock — lets you dose repeatably and audit exactly what went in. Label each with the product, mix date, and lot number, and log it. Salt buildup, algae, and chemical carryover are the enemies of a clean feed; triple-rinsed, hot-washed totes and a strict one-tote-per-nutrient policy defeat all three.

Wash water & biomass slurry.
On the post-harvest side, totes buffer wash and rinse water and move biomass slurry toward extraction. Any water that contacts product destined for ingestibles should be potable and run through a food-grade tote; facility cleaning and equipment rinse can use a clean industrial-grade unit. For slurry, choose a 330-gallon tote with a wide fill opening and confirm your transfer pump and 2" valve can move the viscosity without clogging — a butterfly valve clears solids better than a ball valve on thick loads.

Ethanol — the most common cannabis extraction solvent — can be stored in HDPE, but a flammable liquid changes everything. Use a UN/DOT-rated tote (a UN31HA1 marking covers Class II/III liquids) rather than a generic tank, and treat quantities, spacing, and location under NFPA 30 and your local fire code. Ground and bond the tote, keep it out of the grow's ignition zone, and get sign-off from your Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ). Standard HDPE IBCs are not for hydrocarbon solvents like butane or propane — those need pressure-rated vessels entirely outside the IBC category. Always match the tote to the solvent's SDS and your state's licensing rules before you fill.
