IBC totes for water treatment, dosed and dependable
IBC totes make excellent day-tanks for water-treatment chemicals feeding metering and dosing pumps. Store polymers, coagulants and pH chemicals in HDPE readily; treat hypochlorite with care (vent, keep cool, verify gaskets). Use food-grade totes for anything potable-adjacent and reconditioned industrial totes for non-potable duty.
The single most important distinction is potable vs. non-potable. Non-potable process, cooling, irrigation, and wash water can use industrial reconditioned totes. Anything touching drinking water needs documented food-grade totes and fittings that meet the applicable potable-water standard — see the grades guide.
Chemical duties
Common water-treatment chemicals in IBC totes
| Chemical | Role | HDPE fit | Key caveat |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sodium hypochlorite | Disinfection / chlorination | Compatible with care | Offgasses; vent, keep cool, turn over stock |
| Polymers / flocculants | Solids settling & dewatering | Excellent | High viscosity; makedown mixing |
| Coagulants (alum, ferric) | Coagulation | Good | Acidic; confirm gasket/valve materials |
| pH adjusters (caustic, acid) | pH control | Good for compatible grades | Verify concentration on a resin chart |
| Antiscalants | Membrane / boiler protection | Excellent | Cold-weather viscosity |
Verify every chemical and concentration against a resin compatibility chart and your SDS before use.
Dosing setup
Totes as day-tanks for metering pumps
A 275 or 330 gallon tote gives operators a right-sized, refillable reservoir feeding precise chemical dosing.
Diaphragm and peristaltic metering pumps draw cleanly from a tote's bottom outlet; a suction lance or foot valve keeps the pickup submerged as level drops. Confirm the wetted parts — tubing, seals, valve — are compatible with the specific polymer, coagulant, or hypochlorite. For hypochlorite, add a vented cap to relieve gas, and keep totes shaded to slow degradation. The right valves, adapters and lances turn a bare tote into a repeatable dosing station.
Municipal & industrial
Two settings, one flexible tank
Water & wastewater plants
Chlorination day-tanks, polymer makedown feed, coagulant storage, and pH control — with food-grade totes reserved for any potable-adjacent duty and documented prior contents on file.
Process & cooling water
Antiscalant and biocide dosing, cooling-tower chemistry, and process-water conditioning using reconditioned industrial totes sized to your feed rate and site footprint.
Full circle
Cleaner water, circular tanks
Treatment plants exist to protect water — the tanks that feed them should protect resources too.
Every reconditioned IBC we ship keeps roughly 100 lbs of HDPE and a reusable steel cage in service instead of the waste stream. When your totes are empty, we haul them back on reverse logistics for the next cycle. Explore neighboring industries like chemical processing for deeper compatibility guidance, and use the size chart to plan your footprint.
