IBC Tote Grades Explained: Food Grade vs. Industrial vs. Rebottled

Understand the difference between food-grade, industrial, reconditioned, and rebottled IBC totes so you buy the right tank the first time.
The short answer

IBC totes are classified by their prior contents and refurbishment level. Food-grade totes previously held only FDA-approved edible products; industrial totes held non-hazardous chemicals; reconditioned totes are triple-rinsed and inspected; and rebottled totes pair a brand-new HDPE bottle with a reused steel cage. Always match the grade to your application and confirm the last-contained product.

Not all used IBC totes are created equal. The single most important question when sourcing a tank is: what did it hold before, and how was it processed afterward? The answer determines whether a tote is safe for your product, compliant with regulations, and priced fairly.

The four grades you'll encounter

1. Food-grade IBC totes

These totes have only ever contained FDA-approved food-safe products — think sweeteners, vinegar, glycerin, or edible oils. They carry documentation of prior contents and are the only used totes we recommend for anything that touches consumables, animal feed, or potable water.

2. Industrial / non-food-grade totes

Previously used for non-hazardous industrial liquids such as soaps, surfactants, water treatment chemicals, or lubricants. Perfectly suited to manufacturing, agriculture (non-consumable), and equipment applications where food contact is not a concern.

3. Reconditioned totes

A used bottle that has been professionally washed — typically triple-rinsed or hot-washed — pressure-tested, and re-caged where needed. Reconditioning restores function and cleanliness without the cost or carbon footprint of new plastic.

4. Rebottled totes

The best of both worlds for many buyers: a brand-new, never-filled HDPE bottle installed into a reclaimed, structurally-sound galvanized steel cage and pallet. You get a factory-fresh interior at a fraction of the environmental impact of a fully new unit.

Rule of thumb: for consumables use food-grade or rebottled; for chemicals and equipment, reconditioned industrial totes deliver the best value per dollar and per pound of CO₂ avoided.

How to verify a grade before you buy

  1. Ask for the last-contained product and, for food-grade, supporting documentation.
  2. Inspect the bottle for residue, staining, and odor.
  3. Confirm the wash method (rinsed, triple-rinsed, or hot-washed).
  4. Check the cage and pallet type (steel, composite, or plastic).
  5. Review the UN/DOT rating stamped on the cage if you're shipping regulated liquids.

When you request a quote from us, every tote listing states the grade, wash level, last-contained product, cage type, and UN rating up front — no guesswork.
