For regulated chemicals, the paperwork and the physics both have to line up before a drop of product goes in.

A composite IBC carries a UN31HA1/Y marking when it is certified for Packing Group II/III liquids — the "Y" covers those groups, the "31HA1" describes the rigid plastic bottle in a metal cage. Confirm the marking is present and in date before transport. When decanting flammable or static-prone liquids, bond and ground the tote to dissipate charge, and provide ventilation for any offgassing. Keep incompatible chemicals physically separated, and never mix a tote's duty without a full triple-rinse and inspection first.

  3. Verify the UN rating

    For regulated chemicals, confirm a valid, in-date UN31HA1/Y marking is present before you fill or ship.

  4. Stage secondary containment

    Place the tote on a spill pallet or in a bunded area sized to 110% of its volume, out of direct sun and within temperature range.

  5. Bond, ground & vent

    For flammable or static-prone liquids, bond and ground the tote during transfer and provide adequate ventilation. Add the right valves and fittings for a closed, drip-free draw.

Are HDPE totes compatible with acids and bases?
Many dilute acids and bases, yes — but compatibility is specific to the chemical, concentration, and temperature. Strong oxidizers like concentrated nitric or sulfuric acid degrade HDPE. Always verify against a resin compatibility chart first.
What does UN31HA1/Y mean?
It certifies a composite IBC (rigid plastic bottle in a metal cage) for hazardous liquids; the "Y" covers Packing Groups II and III. A valid, in-date marking is required to transport regulated chemicals.
Do I need secondary containment?
