Prior contents matter because they set how much labor cleaning required and what the tote can legally hold next. Totes that carried non-hazardous, food-grade liquids are cheaper to recondition and command a broader resale market, so sellers can price them competitively.

Raw Materials and Freight
New tote prices float on the cost of HDPE resin and welded steel, both of which track commodity markets. Freight is the sneaky one: because a tote is light for its size, you pay to ship a lot of air, and a long haul can add more to the delivered price than the tote is worth.

Finally, choose a seller who buys totes back at end of life. That buyback turns your empties into a small credit against your next order instead of a disposal cost, and it keeps your containers in the roughly 99 percent of the reuse stream that never sees a landfill.
Compare delivered price, not sticker price. A tote that looks cheaper 800 miles away often costs more once freight lands it on your dock than a slightly pricier one down the road.
