Rainwater Harvesting With IBC Totes: A Practical Guide
IBC totes make excellent rainwater harvesting tanks because a single reconditioned unit stores 275 to 330 gallons at a fraction of the cost of a purpose-built cistern. The keys to clean, usable water are a leaf screen at the inlet, a first-flush diverter that dumps the dirty initial runoff, an opaque cover to block algae, and a properly plumbed overflow. Treat tote-harvested water as non-potable unless you add certified filtration and disinfection.
Rainwater harvesting is one of the most satisfying reuse projects going: you take a container that already had one industrial life, connect it to a downspout, and start banking free water for the garden. A 1,000 square foot roof sheds roughly 600 gallons in a single one-inch rain, which fills a 275 gallon tote twice over with plenty to spare.
The difference between a harvesting setup that stays clean for years and one that turns into a green, mosquito-breeding mess comes down to a few well-understood components. Here is how to build it right.
Choosing and Preparing the Tote
For garden and landscape use, a clean industrial-grade tote is fine. If you plan to water edible crops directly, start with a food-grade tote whose prior contents you can verify. Either way, rinse the bottle thoroughly before first use to clear any residue.

The number one mistake in tote harvesting is skipping the algae control. Any light reaching the water grows algae. Wrap, paint, or shade the tote and the water stays clear for the whole season.
Screening and the First-Flush Diverter
Two components protect water quality at the inlet. A leaf screen or gutter guard keeps out debris and, critically, blocks mosquitoes from reaching the water. A first-flush diverter captures and discards the dirty initial runoff that carries the most roof grime, bird droppings, and dust.
A first-flush diverter is simply a chamber that fills with the opening runoff before allowing the rest to flow to the tote. Once the chamber fills, cleaner water bypasses it into storage. A slow-drip release empties the chamber between storms so it is ready for the next event.
- Fit a leaf screen at the gutter or downspout entry to catch coarse debris
- Plumb a first-flush diverter sized to roughly one gallon per 100 square feet of roof to dump the initial dirty runoff
- Screen every tote opening, including the overflow, with fine mesh to exclude mosquitoes
- Direct the diverter drip release away from foundations and walkways
Sealing Against Mosquitoes
Standing water is a mosquito nursery unless every opening is sealed with fine screen. Check the lid gasket, the overflow outlet, and any inlet penetration. A single unscreened gap is enough for an infestation, so make screening a deliberate step rather than an afterthought.
Overflow and Linking Multiple Totes
Totes fill fast, so a managed overflow is essential. Plumb a large overflow outlet near the top that routes excess water safely to a rain garden, swale, or storm drain, well away from the foundation. Never let a tote overflow directly against the building.
To grow capacity, link totes in series. Connect the bottom 2 in outlets with a manifold so the totes equalize and fill together, then run the overflow off the last tote. Three linked totes bank over 800 gallons, enough to carry a garden through a dry spell.
Elevate the tote on a solid, level base rated for the loaded weight. A 275 gallon tote holds over a ton of water, and a collapsing stand at that weight is dangerous. Concrete block or a purpose-built steel stand on compacted ground is the standard.
Using Harvested Water Safely
Roof-harvested water in a tote is non-potable. It is excellent for irrigation, washing tools and vehicles, flushing, and topping ponds, but it is not drinking water without certified treatment. If potable use is the goal, that means sediment filtration, fine filtration, and a validated disinfection step, which is a bigger project than a simple garden tank.
For gravity-fed irrigation, the same elevation rules apply as any tote reservoir: about 1 psi per 2.3 feet of height, and an inline filter to protect drip emitters from any fine sediment that settles in the tank.
Winter and Off-Season Care
In freezing climates, drain and disconnect the harvesting system before the first hard freeze. A full tote of ice can crack the bottle and burst the plumbing. Open the valve, empty the tote, and store the diverter drained until spring.
Because the whole system is built from a reused container, it embodies the reuse ethic at the heart of good water stewardship: an industrial tote given a second life capturing a free resource that would otherwise run down the storm drain.
