IBC Totes for Agriculture and Farming: A Field Guide
IBC totes are ideal for farm use because a single 275 or 330 gallon tote consolidates bulk liquid that would otherwise need dozens of drums. On the farm they serve as gravity-fed irrigation reservoirs, liquid fertilizer and nutrient tanks, portable livestock water, and sprayer fill stations. Match the tote grade to the job: food-grade for anything touching edible crops or drinking water, and industrial-grade for fuel, herbicide, or wash water.
Walk onto almost any working farm and you will find at least one intermediate bulk container doing a job that used to take a small fleet of drums or a fixed tank. The 275 and 330 gallon IBC tote has become a default piece of agricultural infrastructure precisely because it sits in the sweet spot between a 55 gallon drum and a several-thousand-gallon poly tank: big enough to matter, small enough to move with a pallet fork or tractor loader.

Matching Tote Grade to the Job
The single most important decision on a farm is grade selection, and it comes down to what the liquid touches downstream. Food-grade totes previously held approved food-contact products and carry documentation of their prior contents. Industrial-grade totes may have held solvents, adhesives, or agricultural chemicals and should never be repurposed for anything a person or animal will consume.
- Food-grade: irrigation for edible crops, potable stock water, brewing or wash water, and any nutrient blend that contacts produce
- Industrial-grade: diesel and off-road fuel, concentrated herbicides, non-potable wash-down water, and equipment coolant
- Never cross-use: a tote that held herbicide concentrate cannot be scrubbed back into food-grade service, no matter how thoroughly it is rinsed
Rule of thumb: if the water or liquid will end up on something you eat, in an animal, or in a person, start with a documented food-grade tote and keep its paperwork on file.
Gravity-Fed Drip Irrigation
A tote raised on a sturdy stand becomes a passive irrigation reservoir with no pump required. Every 2.3 feet of vertical elevation gives you roughly 1 psi of head pressure, which is enough to run low-pressure drip tape and micro-emitters across a market garden or high tunnel.
The standard 2 in coarse-thread outlet valve on most totes adapts cleanly to garden hose or lay-flat tubing with an off-the-shelf reducer. For drip systems, add an inline screen or disc filter at the outlet because emitters clog easily on farm-sourced water carrying grit or algae.
- Elevate the tote on an engineered stand rated for the full loaded weight of roughly 2,400 lb for a 275 gallon unit
- Fit a filter at the 2 in outlet to protect emitters and drip tape
- Run a pressure-compensating drip line so the first and last plants get the same flow
- Shade or paint the tote to slow algae growth in the translucent bottle
Controlling Algae in Translucent Totes
The white or natural bottle passes enough light to feed algae, which then clogs filters and emitters. Wrapping the cage in a fitted cover, painting the exterior with an opaque coating, or simply parking the tote in shade solves the problem without chemicals, which matters when the water feeds edible crops.
Liquid Fertilizer and Nutrient Dosing
Bulk liquid fertilizer, fish emulsion, and compost tea all store well in totes, and the tote geometry makes injection straightforward. Many operations pair a tote with a water-driven proportional injector that pulls concentrate at a set ratio, so a single tote of stock solution can dose thousands of gallons of irrigation water.
Two cautions matter here. First, agitate or recirculate suspension fertilizers before drawing, because heavier nutrients settle to the cone bottom over days. Second, keep incompatible products, such as calcium and phosphate or sulfate blends, in separate dedicated totes to avoid precipitates that gel and plug your lines.
Label every nutrient tote with the exact product, mix ratio, and fill date in permanent marker on two sides. A mystery tote in spring planting season is a costly guessing game.
Portable Stock Water and Sprayer Fill
For rotational grazing, a food-grade tote on a skid or trailer moves clean water to remote paddocks where no line runs. Fit a livestock float valve to a stock tank fed from the tote outlet and the herd draws water on demand while the tote refills between paddock moves.
As a sprayer nurse tank, an industrial-grade tote with a 2 in camlock outlet fills a boom sprayer in a minute or two rather than the slow trickle of a garden hose. Keep the fill point above the tank opening to maintain an air gap and prevent back-siphoning of chemical into your water source.
Getting a Decade of Service
Totes fail early from three things: UV embrittlement, freeze cracks, and cage damage from careless forking. Store them out of direct sun when idle, drain and open valves before a hard freeze, and always lift under the pallet feet rather than jamming forks into the cage.
When a bottle finally does reach end of life, the cage, pallet, and even the HDPE bottle are all recyclable. A tote that has cycled through farm duty still has real reclaim value, so retire it into a recycling or reconditioning stream rather than the burn pile.
